05/06/14: Evan Hegarty and his Enterprise of Technology team won 1st place in the Idea to Product Competition

They presented a comprehensive technology commercialization plan for the new anode material and fabrication process for anodes of lithium-ion batteries.

The Idea to Product UT Austin Competition is an event coordinated bye the 12P Program and the Technology Entrepreneurship Society with support form the Chari of Free Enterprise. The competition is an early-stage technology commercialization plan competition that is open to UT Austin students of all disciplines who are interested in technology-focused entrepreneurship. Student groups present assessments of their technology-based products or services to a panel of judges. Entries should be uniuqe and innovative, be feasible to implement, and adress an identified market need, and they must have an underlying technology component. Teams are ecouraged to focuse on the benefits of their technology and its associated market potential, rather than the technical features. The 12P competition gives competitiors hand-on commercialization experience, mentoring and feedback frrom entrepreneurs on the UT-Austin faculty and from industry, and a chance to win $E8500 in cash prizes. Based on teh work done by past student teams, university patenting efforsts for certain technologies have been stepped-up, university technologies have been liscenesed, and new companies have been formed.

Congratulations Evan!

04/16/2014: Murat represented UT Austin in NPI's Congressional visit

Murat represented UT Austin in National Photonics Initiative (NPI) Congressional visit on March 25,26. He was one of the 36 volunteers from photonics among a total of nearly 200 volunteers participating in this year’s Science-Engineering-Technology Working Group (SETWG) Congressional Visits Day.

The Congressional Visits Day started with Congressional breakfast hosted by Representative Rush Holt (New Jersey) at the Capitol Hill. Then, the whole Texas delegacy visited Texas Representatives Ted Poe, Roger Williams, John Culberson, and Texas Senators John Cornyn and Ted Cruz, and their staff. In these meetings, Murat presented his research to emphasize our lab research impact on biomedical research which have potential to provide many new clinical solutions and enable creative medical treatments as yet unimagined.

The objective of this visit is to urge support from Congress for:

•The bipartisan Revitalize American Manufacturing and Innovation Act of 2013 (RAMI), to establish manufacturing institutes known as the Network for Manufacturing Innovation (NMI); the institutes wouldfunction through a public-private partnership between the federal government, local governments, universities, research institutes and industry to accelerate manufacturing innovation in technologies with commercial applications

•Reauthorization of the bi-partisan America COMPETES Act (originally passed in 2007 and expired in December 2013) to ensure American competitiveness in the global marketplace, and adding language specifying photonics to reflect the industry's critical role in the ongoing innovation of many other sectors

•Establishment of a National Photonics Prototyping and Advance Manufacturing Facility within the Department of Defense's manufacturing mandate, possibly through inclusion of language in the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA); establishment of such a facility could produce critical defense applications for warfighters, as well as drive new generations of high-tech commercial applications such as a more secure Internet, enhance medical diagnostics, and portable sources of renewable energy.

The NPI is a collaborative, industry-driven campaign to advance photonics research and funding. Activities concentrate on five key areas: defense and national security, energy, healthcare, communications, and manufacturing.

03/25/2014: Murat receives travel grant for OSA Congressional Visits Day

Murat Yildirim has been awarded a travel grant to attend Optical Society of America (OSA) Congressional Visits Day. The goal of this event is to educate members of Congress about the importance of the optics, photonics, the National Photonics Initiative (NPI) and sustained Research & Development funding. The event will take place March 25-26, 2014 in Washington D.C., just as Congress is considering funding for Fiscal 2015. Congratulations Murat!

02/20/2014: Congratulations Arjun on receiving a UT Undergraduate Research Fellowship (URF)

Arjun Rao received a Spring 2014 UT Undergraduate Research Fellowship (URF) for the proposal entitled "Surgical Treatment of Vocal Fold Scarring with High-Speed Ultrafast Laser Endoscalpel". This fellowship is provided from the UT Vice President for Research Office, and several colleges on campus.

Congratulations Arjun!
